About this event
Data centers are driving carbon-intensive energy growth in Northern Virginia. How can we address this? How can we make Amazon, Facebook, Google, and all the big names more sustainable? Is there a tool to increase renewable energy at the data centers, available to local governments right now, that does not rely on the Governor or the incumbent utility?
The new report from five Graduate Students from the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs states, "Data centers are the backbone of the modern internet age and are critical to processing, storing, and disseminating large-scale data." Nicknamed “Data Center Alley”, Loudoun County, Virginia has the world’s largest concentration of data centers." The UCLA Team interviewed stakeholders, including data center experts, regarding options for meeting clean energy goals in Loudoun County. Their report compares and evaluates three policy options: 1) implementing CCA, 2) maintaining the incumbent utility, Dominion Energy’s, electricity status quo, and 3) raising state renewable portfolio standards (RPS). The report concludes that Community Choice Aggregation is the superior policy choice for local decision makers.
